Local Attractions

Norfolk is a rural county bounded by the sea to the north and east and by rivers to the south and west. The Rivers Bure, Wensum, and Yare and flow through the middle and with the shallow lakes created by peat digging in medieval times make up an extensive area of waterways that form the Norfolk Broads.

Wildlife is protected in the several inland and coastal nature reserves that are very popular with bird watchers. These lie within easy reach by car. The area is also ideal for fishing with many local lakes and fisheries.

There are 9 golf courses within a ten mile radius of the cottages and excellent links courses at the coast just half an hour's drive away with, of course, wonderful beaches alongside for the children!

Norwich was Britain's second-largest town in medieval times and is now a bustling city. It has many historic buildings: the Norman Castle and Cathedral, the Tudor Guildhall, Dragon Hall, the Georgian Assembly House, and the Octagon Chapel to name but a few, which jostle among numerous churches. (Reputedly, Norwich once had a church for every week of the year and a pub for every day of the year.) The city centre now also boasts modern shopping in pedestrianised streets. There is still a wonderful daily market in the heart of the city with cafés and restaurants to suit all tastes and nationalities.

Small market towns such as Alysham and Holt are ideal for seeking out curiosities, antiques and old books, plus there is a weekly auction somewhere every day of the week. The coastal villages vary from traditional fishing ports to Victorian resorts with shows on the pier and lively modern towns such as Great Yarmouth.

It is impossible to list all the attractions in the area, so good information guides and maps are placed in all the cottages.

There is always something for the children to do — steam trains, boat trips, adventure parks, wildlife parks, fun fairs and the seaside. For those taking life at a quieter pace, there are glorious stately homes, and country churches. Gardeners will love to visit Peter Beales roses and Bressingham as well as established gardens in the grand estates. These cottages form an ideal base to go exploring if you wish, or just to take in the peace and quiet of the Norfolk countryside.
